5 Areas I Don't Hesitate to Invest in

I try to invest with intention. Sometimes it shakes up my environmental values. I have comes to term with investing in theses area because life isn’t simple and I am only human.

1. Education

Continue to educate yourself even after traditional school. I will continue to read personal development, personal finance, and general enjoyable books, watch educational Youtube videos, and listen to podcasts to gain knowledge. I would also love to take a dance class or classes to acquire other life skills, how to use a knife, gardening, or urban foraging.

2. Dental hygiene,

If you read, Sustainability is about finding the right solution for you, you know that I made natural toothpaste out of baking soda and essential oils and used a bamboo toothbrush. After weeks of using them, my teeth looked bleak, unhealthy, and stained. This sustainable swap was not working for me.

I also switched to an electric toothbrush with my dentist’s recommendation and I haven’t looked back. After switching, the first time in my life I got a compliment from my dentist after a teeth cleaning session. There’s something about an electronic toothbrush and it’s additional vibrations that really clean your teeth.

3. Mental Health

I spend $128/month on Talkspace, an online therapy. Being able to afford therapy in itself is a privilege that I’m grateful for.

I spend $40 for a year’s worth of the Calm app and it’s changed my life. It’s usually $70 (~$6/month), but there are 50% discount codes out there for your first year. Meditation can be hard if you don’t know what you’re doing. The app has a “30-Day Meditation” Challenge that will teach you the basics and help form the habit. You need to take baby steps before you can run. Exercise also helps with mental health.

4. Skincare

It’s hard enough to find skin products that work, let alone is vegan, cruelty-free, and has eco-friendly packaging. I am on my way to transitioning. But I will splurge on a product that helps my skin, even it doesn’t fall under those three categories.

5. Travel

I think travel goes hand in hand with education. Life’s too short to not explore the world and see what different states and countries have to offer. Traveling is a privilege that requires time and money. I will save money and make time to travel. Unfortunately, Airplanes also emit tons of CO2 in the atmosphere exacerbating climate change. Airlines should have carbon offset programs for the damage, they are ensuing onto Mother Earth. It would include investing in trees, other vegetation, other methods to absorb carbon from the atmosphere.
