Are you an Abstainer or Moderator?

“Abstainer vs. Moderator” was first brought to my attention by Gretchen Rubin, Author of the Happiness Project!

Get to know yourself! Knowing which one you are can help you with your strategy. Commonly used for eating habits and other addicting indulgences like Netflix, streaming services, alcohol, and cigarettes.

Abstainer

  • have trouble stopping something once you’ve started

  • Needs to stay away all together

Moderator

  • I can have a moderate amount at a time.

  • Having a healthy amount will not be detrimental to my life.

What Am I?

I am Abstainer! I have an addictive personality

If I open a bag of Hot Cheetos. I will finish said bag of Hot Cheetos! If I start a Netflix Series, I will most likely binge watch. There’s no such thing as one episode.

I’m not a fan of having to wait week after week for an episode to come out. I want to watch it all at once. Have the next episode readily available.

Knowing myself, I’ve never smoked cigarettes because of this personality trait.

What does this have to do with the Environment?

Thinking about it, we all need to be Moderators or Abstainers for the Environment!

Abstain from scarce resources. Abstain from fossil fuels that worsen the climate change, the earth has at hand. Abstain from destroying habitats of endangered species.

Moderately consume certain resources like trees. We need trees for their oxygen, shade, habitat for animals. Humans use trees for buildings, paper, packaging. We need to use this resource moderately. At a sustainable rate, where trees can regrow.

What does this have to do with Money?

Moderately, spend your money. Don’t splurge. Consciously spend.

If you’re an abstainer, don’t put yourself in tempting situations, where you’ll go on a spending spree.
